Pink Flamingo Project Takes Aim at Vacant and Abandoned Buildings

Pink Flamingo Project Takes Aim at Vacant and Abandoned Buildings

Earlier in the year, I came up with the idea to visually tag vacant and abandoned buildings in the neighborhood with some sort of theme drawing inspiration from what a group called Buffalo’s Young Preservationist were doing with “Heart Bombs” in other parts of Buffalo. The problem with vacant buildings isn’t something that is going to go away anytime soon. After awhile, they start to blend in with the surroundings and it is human nature to stop noticing them. I had a few ideas as to what to use a theme, but none seemed to strike the right chord with me.

Then a BFA friend sent me this.

Buffalo School Board Approves $794 Million Budget

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A balanced, $794 million budget has been passed by the Buffalo School Board.

Board members approved the plan, which closed a budget deficit of $38 million.

Cuts included getting rid of 50 bus aides through attrition.
There will also be fewer coordinators, teachers and an occupational therapist assigned to the central office.

The district thinks it will be dealing with budget deficits for the next three years.

Mikey's Way Visits Women & Children's Hospital

BUFFALO, NY - The Mikey's Way Foundation brought gifts to some young patients at Buffalo Women & Children's Hospital on Wednesday.

Founded by Michael Friedman in 2005, it was his wish to help kids in the hospital fight boredom, by giving them wireless devices that allowed them to stay connected to family and friends.

Sadly, Mikey died in 2008, but his dream lives on. To date Mikey's Way has handed out laptops and computer games to over 3,000 kids.

Channel Two Photojournalist Dooley O'Rourke followed Mikey's dad Les, as he visited some patients and kept the mission of Mikey's Way alive.
