Highly-Sought After Art Collector, Charles Rand Penney Dies at 87

Buffalo, NY - Charles Rand Penney, the Lockport art collector who helped form the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College, died Sunday night in DeGraff Memorial Hospital from heart failure. He was 87 years old.

Penney's passion for Jackson Pollock paintings and Mr. Peanut paraphernalia earned him a reputation as the region's most eccentric and highly sought-after art collector.

Penney began collecting art by Western New Yorkers in the mid-30's, eventually collecting more than 100,000 objects that he kept and researched in his own home.

In honor of Penney's series of collections donated to the gallery in the early to mid-90's, then-director Anthony Bannon successfully campaigned to rename the institution in Penney's honor. He recently donated items from his collection to the Buffalo Museum of Science, San Francisco's DeYoung Museum, Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery and the South Australian Museum.

Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market Announces August Events

The best thing about the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market? “That everything is local,” said one frequent visitor. “I get to know the people supplying the strawberries for my grandkids, the tomatoes for my salsa. I know where it came from and who grew it.”

A wide variety of family friendly special events and demonstrations are planned throughout the season. August events and attractions include:

Aug. 7: Classical violinist David Adamczyk, Rose Garden Childhood Center, Kid Biz, and a flame-working demonstration courtesy of Expressive Glass.

Aug. 14: Guest chef demonstration with Chef William Metzgar.

Aug. 21: Cooking demonstration by Ron Glatzhofer of Saltamontes Salsa; musical entertainment by the Buffalo Chamber Players; and the Center for Resolution & Justice, Child & Family Services.

Local Band Raises Awareness About Autism

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo band The Path performed at Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Friday, July 30, to help spread the word about autism spectrum disorders.

Lead singer Elaine “Leena” Bianca has written a song titled “In My World (Matthew’s Song)” to convey life from the perspective of a child with autism. Bianca’s son was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder 13 years ago.

A portion of proceeds from the song will benefit the Children's Guild Foundation Autism Spectrum Disorder Center at Women's and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. The center provides a unique multi-displinary and family-focused approach to diagnosing and supporting children with autism spectrum disorders.
