Elmwood Village Survey Identifies New Business Opportunities

BUFFALO, NY – The Elmwood Village Association (EVA) has announced the completion of a consumer needs survey intended to identify the types of specialty businesses that residents and consumers would desire and patronize in the Elmwood Village commercial district.

Respondents identified the need for five specific niche businesses: hardware store, sporting goods store, cheese store, butcher shop, and seafood store.

“By exploring the needs of our residents, the EVA can strengthen the economic health of the commercial district and the surrounding neighborhoods,” says Betsy Bergen, Chair of the EVA’s Economic Development Committee.  “The results from this survey give us the ammunition we need to reach out to specialty shops that are desired by people who regularly shop on Elmwood – businesses that will complement our already diversified shopping district,” she added.

Approximately 64% of the respondents currently live in the Elmwood Village, 72% were female, and more than 25% have household incomes of $125,000+.  In addition to asking about the types of retail shops they would like to see in the Village, questions included what time of day they shop, what days of the week, how often they shop, number of persons in their household, and more.

Ms. Bergen encourages anyone interested in opening up a business to reach out to the EVA for assistance with securing a location, acquiring financing and accessing demographic information.  EVA’s Economic Development Committee also plans to work closely with business groups such as the Buffalo State College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to identify potential entrepreneurs who are interested in opening these types of businesses.  The SBDC can provide assistance with business plans, e-commerce, marketing, loan information assistance, and more.

The mission of The Elmwood Village Association is to work with businesses and residents to improve the quality of life for our entire community.
