Sing Along with the Historical Society's 'Music at the Museum'

In conjunction with its ongoing Community Gallery exhibit, “James Marino: Bflo Watercolors,” which is co-sponsored by Autistic Services, Inc, Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society is pleased to present “Music at the Museum with Autistic Services, Inc.”

This community-oriented, family-friendly evening takes place on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The evening will include music-oriented crafting, and a family sing-a-long, with hands on instruments, led by Miriam Minkoff, Autistic Services' music director.

Vintage silent cartoons will be screened in the museum’s auditorium, with live pianist John L. playing along on the Historical Society's 1911 pipe organ. Free museum tours and artifact hunts are included.

Admission for this event is FREE for Historical Society members, and free with regular museum admission for non-members.

Catholic School Alumni Invited to 2011 All School Reunion

Alumni who attended Catholic elementary schools throughout the Diocese of Buffalo will converge on the Hearthstone Manor in Depew on September 23 for “The Spirit We Share – Reunion 2011.” Sponsored by the Catholic Alumni Partnership (CAP) of the Diocese of Buffalo, the event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Bishop Edward U. Kmiec will welcome the attendees and offer a special blessing.

This is the second annual reunion. Last year, about 250 alumni representing 85 past and present Catholic elementary schools attended the gathering.

This afternoon, Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, will be speaking at Minty Wellness in Darien Center, NY. Admission for the event is $10, a portion will support Farm Sanctuary. A small vegan buffet meal will be provided following a discussion. This event is a perfect opportunity to hear about how eating a vegetarian diet can improve not only your own life, but the lives of many others as well. There will be an opportunity try some great vegetarian food, hear about Gene's book "Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and MInds About Animals and Food", and to meet, and be inspired by, Gene Baur.

Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market Lists August 13 Activities

The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, a Western New York tradition featuring more than 30 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local products, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine. Providing musical entertainment at the open-air venue this week, Aug. 13, will be singer/guitarist Kate Shaffer from 10 to 11:30 a.m.  

The market also welcomes several community groups this week, including Community Beer Works, Buffalo Animal Shelter, GrowWNY.org, Richmond Ashland National Register Historic District Initiative and UNYTS. Niagara Landing Wine Cellar and Freedom Run Winery will offer wine-tasting.

Businesses Sought for Area's Largest Pet Expo

America's pet industry is booming.  According to the market research company Packages Facts, pet owners spent $55 billion on products and services for their pet in 2010.  To fulfill area pet owners' desire to shop for quality products and services for their favorite furry friend, the Maddie's Pet Rescue Project will be hosting Western New York's largest Pet Expo. 

The Pet Expo will be held on Sep 30 and Oct 1 at the Fairgrounds Event Center in Hamburg.  Boarding facilities, fencing companies, gourmet pet treat makers, and other businesses that would appeal to a pet owner's lifestyle are invited to participate in this comprehensive event.  Local rescue groups can also take part in the Expo's Super Adoption Event.  Between established pet owners and those who adopt during the Pet Expo, over 2,500 people are expected to attend.

The public will have one final opportunity to view finished luxury apartments at 305 Utica St. in Buffalo’s Elmwood Village at 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 11. The finished, nine-apartment “A” Building will reach full capacity this month, with all eight luxury apartments and one studio apartment occupied.
