National Grid Offers Energy, Money-Saving Tips for Safe, Bright Holiday

National Grid customers don’t have to be Scrooges to save money on lighting and festivities this holiday season.  By following some simple energy efficiency and safety tips, customers can benefit from a more environmentally friendly, safe and cost-effective season.

Save Big on Lighting

Over the past few years, new lighting alternatives have become available that may cost more initially, but cost much less to maintain and operate.  Energy-efficient miniature or light-emitting diode (LED) lights use considerably less energy than traditional lighting technology. The list below provides customers with the potential costs associated with each type of lighting.

March of Dimes Partners with Statewide Health Agencies to Address Late Preterm Birth

In an effort to reduce the number of late preterm births, the March of Dimes New York Chapter announced today it will partner with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the New York State Chapter of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG District II) to help educate health care providers and the public on the importance of the last weeks of pregnancy and the risk of early deliveries.  A healthy, full term-pregnancy lasts 39-40 weeks, yet there has been a rise in births scheduled prior to that time through inductions and C-sections that are not medically necessary - a practice once thought to be safe.  Research shows that scheduling births, even a few weeks too early, may result in babies having feeding, breathing and learning problems.  They are also more likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Videos Allow WNY Travelers to Discover the Spirit of London Before Crossing the Border

Shops, restaurants, theater, cultural institutions, wineries, museums, markets, comfortable hotels, sports and recreation, slot machines, special events ... sounds like a fun and accurate description of Western New York, right?

Actually, the exciting and equally inviting city of London, Ontario, boasts many similarities to the Buffalo region. Maybe that’s why more and more Buffalonians are traveling to London for a quick getaway.

Pet Connection Announces Holiday Season Events

Pet Connection Programs Inc. is counting on support from the generous residents of Western New York to make this a happy holiday season. Volunteers from the nonprofit maternity and special care animal shelter located in Marilla will be at several locations throughout Erie County in an effort to raise funds for the care of dozens of dogs and cats in need of loving homes.

Activities kick off on Black Friday as volunteers from the shelter will be selling their ever-popular pet totes filled with food, treats and toys at the Eastern Hills Mall, near Dave & Buster’s. The volunteers will return to the mall on three Saturday: November 27, December 11 and December 18. Pups from the shelter will also be there to greet you!

Turkeys Leave Country, Will Spend Holiday Overseas!

There are 68 more days until Thanksgiving, and you can do your worrying about that turkey during the last 41. The first 27 days, or until October 15th, you can spend being thankful that the turkey you might not get will go to our boys overseas. This about sizes up the situation. Some time ago the government slapped a two-way freeze order on the national turkey crop.  It froze the sale of the birds until it can buy up 15,000,000 to 20,000,000 pounds needed by the armed forces, and it is now freezing the birds for shipment overseas.

Turkeys remaining after Uncle Sam has his share will be allocated to civilian use.
