Homeless Alliance of Western New York Releases 2011 Data

The Homeless Alliance of WNY has released the results of their State of Homelessness 2011 for the federal reporting year October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011.  The data used to create this report were compiled from the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) as well as the annual Point in Time count, Housing Inventory Chart, Unsheltered Street Count, and the Erie County Department of Social Services and Veterans Administration.

Throughout the year of 2011, there were an estimated 5,050 people who experienced homelessness in Erie County and on any given night there were approximately 1,000 homeless people.  These figures include people in Emergency Housing, Transitional Housing, Safe Havens, the unsheltered, and those taking part in the Code Blue Warming Center beds.  Although the majority of homeless persons are single, the number of homeless families increased by 4% from 2010 to 29%.

Authorizing Resolution – The Council approved a resolution sponsored by Majority Leader and Masten District Council Member Demone A. Smith authorizing an amendment and restatement of a ground lease for certain educational facilities to the Erie County Industrial Development Agency (“ECIDA”). The resolution also authorizes other matters related to certain bonds issued by the ECIDA for financing the refunding of Series 2004 Bonds, determining the terms and conditions of such agreements, and other matters in connection therewith.  It is the Council’s position that these actions will be beneficial to the City and will promote educational opportunities for City residents.

Mehaffy Reports on Green Code to Urban Land Institute Young Leaders Group

Brenday Mehaffy, Buffalo's head of strategic planning, will be providing an update on the re-write of the City's archaic zoning ordinance.  The event is sponsored by the Urban Land Institute's Young Leaders Group of Western New York (ULI YLG of WNY), a subsidiary of the global nonprofit research and education organization, the Urban Land Institute. 

The one hour presentation takes place on Thursday, March 29, at noon in the Buffalo Niagara Partnership offices, 665 Main Street.  Price is $5 dollars for ULI members, $15 for non-ULI members, with lunch included.  Space is limited.  Please register in advance as there will be no on-site registration.
