BUFFALO, NY-- Students and parents of students entering middle or high school are welcome and encouraged to attend the Nichols School Open House.

Nichols School is a nationally recognized coed college preparatory school for grades 5-12. An independent, non-denominational school, Nichols develops students' intellectual and extra-curricular passions to thrive in the global community of the 21st century. With an average class size of 14 students, world-class teachers foster each student's talents beyond the limitations of standardized testing.

Nichols' beautiful campus holds many interactive learning spaces, including a sustainable math and science center, new visual art rooms and unparalleled athletics facilities. Exchange programs in China, Costa Rica, France and Spain create lifelong connections and deepen students' experiences in the classroom.

Buffalo Seminary to Hold Open House on October 14

Buffalo Seminary offers a unique high-school experience for girls who want to be challenged to think beyond the NYS Regents Exam. An average class size of 11, an independent curriculum, a comprehensive advisory system and individualized college counseling ensure that each Sem student receives the individual attention she needs for personal and academic success.

Families are invited to learn more at an Open House on Sunday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors may stop by anytime that's convenient for them during those hours.

A one-to-one tablet computer program enables students to communicate with their peers in Buffalo and around the world.

Fine arts offerings include opportunities in music, movement, drama, drawing, painting, photography and graphic design.

Crew is just one of the many opportunities for team sports at Sem.

Canisius College Named a "Catholic College of Distinction"

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius College is a 2012 "Catholic College of Distinction," according to the annual Colleges of Distinction guidebook. Each year, the publication identifies 200 or more colleges and universities that excel at "the pillars of a strong and active undergraduate education." Criteria for the "College of Distinction" recognition includes the ways in which undergraduate institutions engage students, provide outstanding teaching, offer vibrant communities, and produce successful outcomes.

Fidelis Care Awards Grant for In-School Social Work Program

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 18, 2012 – Catholic Charities of Buffalo has received a $55,000 grant from Fidelis Care, the New York State Catholic health plan, to support its In-School Social Work program for several Buffalo grade schools. This is the eighth year Fidelis Care has made possible funds for the program, which supports students and their families in school and the community.

The grant reflects part of the funds made available through the 2011 Fidelis Care Community Grant Fund, which are distributed across New York State’s eight Roman Catholic Dioceses to non-profit organizations with similar missions and values of service to low-income, vulnerable individuals.

School Bus Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility

Rural/Metro offers tips to parents, kids and drivers to ensure a safe return to school

Buffalo, NY (August 30, 2012) – As summer draws to a close and thousands of students across Western New York head back to school, parents can help their children make the return smoothly and safely.

Buffalo-based Rural/Metro Medical Services and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offer parents these six school bus safety tips to share with their kids:

Walk, Don’t Run

Just as there’s no running in the hallways at school, no running to the bus stop either. Leave 5-10 minutes early so you’re not rushed and use sidewalks whenever possible. Otherwise walk on the left, facing traffic.
